The Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre is the country’s most exclusive summer theater, located in the heart of Budapest, surrounded by the beautiful natural and architectural environment of Margaret Island, embraced by the Danube.
With the historic Water Tower standing in its courtyard, the Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre is a cultural landmark of both the country and Budapest, offering a rich array of cultural content and significant tourist appeal. It provides quality entertainment, where cultural content and values are showcased together.
Built in 1938, the nearly 3,000-seat theater with its own harbor hosts the largest multidisciplinary arts festival in Budapest during the summer months.
The Margaret Island Summer Festival is the country’s longest and most diverse cultural festival, offering over seventy programs from May to August, mostly as exclusive premieres. It caters to a wide range of genres, attracting both domestic and international visitors and engaging audiences of all ages, including families.
During the closure and reopening periods of the indoor theaters, the Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre takes on the role of active artistic institutions and service providers from the main theater season. With its rich variety of genres, the festival ensures continuity in the cultural life of the capital, enhancing Budapest’s reputation as the cultural capital of the four seasons.

The Margaret Island Open-Air Stage is one of the country’s oldest and leading outdoor stages, hosting spectacular major performances – opera, operetta, opera galas, ballet, contemporary dance, musicals, classical music, film scores, jazz, pop, crossover concerts, world music, and folklore genres.
During the tourist high season, opera, musical, dance, and drama performances, as well as classical, symphonic, light music, and jazz concerts, take place with the participation of the finest domestic and international artists and ensembles.
Throughout the summer months, the Margaret Island Water Tower, which serves as both an observation tower and a Visual Art Gallery, has become a major cultural tourism attraction.
The Margaret Island Theatre regularly collaborates with the most renowned domestic artistic institutions. Its partners include the Hungarian State Opera, the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hungarian Radio Music Ensembles, the Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the Óbuda Danubia Orchestra, the Győr National Theatre, the Kecskemét National Theatre, the Veszprém Petőfi Theatre, and the Duna Art Society.
The Margaret Island Open-Air Stage is an international meeting point for domestic stars and world-renowned artists. In the years leading up to the pandemic, the number of foreign guests significantly increased both on the stage and in the audience, and we hope they will return once again.
Some of the domestic and international artists who have performed in recent years include: Zoltán Kocsis, Ferenc Snétberger, Andrea Rost, Erika Miklósa, Félix Lajkó, Gergely Kesselyák, Gábor Bretz, the Budapest Bár band, Yuja Wang, Hilary Hahn, Boban Marković, Ron Carter, Stanley Jordan, Stacey Kent, the Monte-Carlo Ballet, the London Globe Theatre, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the Maribor Ballet, the multiple Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir, the Pink Martini band, the Buena Vista Social Club, Élodie Frégé, and world-renowned opera singers such as Piotr Beczala, Aida Garifullina, Erwin Schrott, Béatrice Uria Monzon, Maria Agresta, and Francesco Meli.
